Flyby is a provider of value-added remote sensing services and products, based on satellite and airborne imaging. Flyby also develops optical devices for environmental monitoring and environmental remote sensing.
Main application fields are: monitoring of solar energy for photovoltaic plants, monitoring of solar UV radiation for health care, monitoring of sea and coastal features (e.g. water quality, oil spill, coast classification, etc.) for biological impact assessment, pollution detection, navigation risk assessment, decision support.
Example of space based technology: SolarSAT
SolarSAT is an integrated system delivering a suite of web services for the solar photovoltaic plants, exploiting satellite EO images to measure the available solar energy.
The PV-Planner service allows the design and dimensioning of a PV plant, starting from the candidate locality for which the available average solar energy is derived from archived satellite data. After choice of desired power, plant components, mounting characteristics, orientation, etc., the technical and economic parameters are presented on the web: number of modules and strings to achieve the desired power, covered area depending on type of mounting, overall cost, Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return, breakeven point, etc.
The PV-Controller service is for existing PV plants and informs the PV plant owner or maintainer about the production status (inverter status, producible energy, production efficiency). To measure the producible energy the service can rely on either satellite real time acquisitions or on local measures regarding irradiance, temperature and wind, done by a family of SolarSAT sensors. A SolarSAT datalogger installed by the plant collects both the produced energy from the inverters and the local measures and transmits them via GPRS to the Flyby control station. The results are displayed on the user webpage.
